1999 Metcalf fellows; Woodside in front row on right in purple
I was in the first class of fellows at the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, in 1999. This weeklong experience sends about a dozen journalists into the field with scientists, learning about water quality, geology, fish, climate change, and much more.
I was a new environment reporter at a daily newspaper when I was a fellow. It changed my career. Read the profile the Metcalf Institute posted about me this week as the 15th annual fellowship is beginning in Narragansett, Rhode Island. I now serve as chair of the Metcalf Institute’s Advisory Board and look forward to meeting the fellows in a few days.
