Damaged power plant as viewed from just off the Mattabesett Trail

I maintain a hiking trail in Middletown, Connecticut, that skirts the future natural gas/oil power plant where an explosion killed five people on February 7. The blast blew out parts of the plant’s main building during a “blow-down” to clean out the natural gas line. The plant was supposed to start operating later this year. How unusual is such an accident? I’m going to find out and write about it for Connecticut Woodlands magazine’s spring issue.
