Writing Workshops

Join me for a long-weekend workshop in one of my favorite natural settings this June.

Writing from Nature on Squam Lake, New Hampshire, June 13-16, 2024.

Rockywold-Deephaven Camps is a special family camp tucked below the Squam Range, six miles north of Holderness, New Hampshire, and south of the White Mountains. I know the trails, woods, and lake of this place better than I know my own back yard.

I climbed my first mountain here at age three and ran my first Writing from Nature workshop here several years ago. This year’s workshop lasts three days, allowing plenty of time for the solo rambles I send you on, the guided writing and the exercise I call “field guide to a morning”—and also pleasant stretches of time just to unwind. RDC is rustic yet comfortable.

We will likely be in a large cabin or one of the lodges. Many rooms are shared, but there is plenty of opportunity for privacy. The food is excellent. Our own docks and access to boating and swimming. I promise you that your time with me will connect you to new ideas and new ways of exploring them.

Agenda:

Thursday: We arrive, walk around a bit, have dinner together, and after dinner will gather for a talk about how exploring a bit, being uncomfortable, and observing beauty can unlock writing. A night walk together.

Friday: I will send everyone out to walk quietly in the morning with no notebook or camera. This is a powerful exercise! We will be sure you don’t get lost. Then, guided writing. Lunch. Talk of how writing can be part of a career, or the main career. We will gather by the water and hear more about the ecosystem on Squam Lake and the threats to it.

Saturday: Our walks this morning will be with camera and notes, observation in situ. More guided writing and examples of where such exercises can lead writing. Lunch. Free time in the afternoon. A special fun event in late afternoon. Evening: another optional night walk near the water.

Sunday: A quieter morning, with optional individual sessions and a visit to the RDC store and museum. Free time.
